MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Custom exhaust...

Im dreaming ahead a year or so...but when it comes to the exhaust on my K-series conversion i want to make something special.

What i was thinking was a side exit system, symilar to the Caterham or Westfield. It could exit via the fibreglass front wing, infront of the a-post. Obvioulsy means cutting a hole/slot for it.

Id love to make this mysled with a tube bender!

My question is to do with the laws for exhaust and emissions for classic cars...obviously its a k-series so not a "classic" engine...

Do i need a cat? what are the noise regs etc...?

Can anyone help?
Rob McGeown ( LMG 5K - '72 RWA)

Rob,
I've been looking at various options for this too. I'm really keen to see if with an A series you can 'hide' the box and only have a small side exit pipe, but not looked into it fully.

I know of a guy in wales who is an 'exhaust guru' who will fabricate custom exhausts for seriously good prices (and they're brilliant). Do you want putting in touch?#

yeah, if you have the details that would be great...
Rob McGeown ( LMG 5K - '72 RWA)

Noise and emissions as for a '72 midget. No cat.

Sounds good, theres some scope then.

I heard that there is some small law for side exit exhausts, that they have to exit on the opposite side to pedestrians...or something along thos lines...

could be a problem with the orientation of k-conversions...dont the exhaust ports exit on the pedestrian side?

Ive just found this site:
http://www.jetex.co.uk/website/custom_parts.php

they sell individual components for a custom exhaust, includnig a half meter flexible section...could be ideal for going through the wing on a side exit system.

I have just had a pleasant hour chatting the the owner of http://www.smartsport.co.uk/index.html He is currently putting the finishing touches to his hillclimb Midget. This includes the making of a custom (over the axle) stainless exhaust. With future plans to make stainless manifolds, I would think it might be worth having a chat about your needs.

Cheers Carl

Carl,
This is something I was looking into. It would be interesting to see the route the through the tunnel exhausts take as it'd be the perfect solution for mine (and many others I'm sure).
Rich Amos (1330cc Blaze Red '72)

The Guy at Smartsport (Richard) makes everything for his exhaust systems and even the baffles are stainless.
C Bintcliffe

Through the tunnel?!!?
Nick

I passed my MOT inspection with this lot hanging off the side. Made a noise like the wrath of Thor!!

Luckly I have already figured this out....this is the direction I am going, It took a bit of brain energy, and some time, But I think it will look really cool.....the Chrome side pipes come in 3 pieces, the front elbow, the mid section that is the actual muffler, and the tail pipe, with a heat grill over the middle section...aka muffler...I had to make up some new brakets to position the side pipes so as to come up just under the door, luckly the front elbow, can be angled down and still level so as to not have to cut or grind into the body of the car, then coming off the header (3 into 1) Im going to make a "Y" pipe then use flex pipe to make the connection to from the "y" pipe to the side pipes, Im going to get about 4" of clearance from the bottom of the side pipe to the ground which is a 1/2 inch more then the existing exhaust pipe, I also had to some skid plates and cover plates out of polished aluminum 2.5 inch angle stock (polished myself...1/3 the price.} Because of the way the heat grill has to attach.

The one thing I have been thinking about in the last few months is adding a cross over bar after the "Y" so as to even out the exhauste flow pressure so the connection from the header to the 2 side pipes will look like the letter "A", I havent gotten it installed yet, just lack the time and decent weather, as this was one of my winter projects before doing the engine build,,,,but its ready to go, when ever the weather gets to 50-60 degrees. And I have 3 days to do it in.

I have made all my own exhausts for the last 15 years but only from the manifold backwards. I used with great success pre formed bends, straight pipe and silencers in S/S with no problems and great results.

I have never found the need to make my own manifolds as I have always found an after market item satisfactory although I do know a chap in Lincoln who will fabricate any manifold you desire. I now also have a friend who has an exhaust pipe bender (£7000) that can make any exhaust required at prices compatable with after market crap sold at Kwik fit!

The one observation I would make is that fitting an exhaust pipe to a vehicle without a silencer would make a hell of a racket and would be illegal! I have seen many turbo cars however that do not have a silencer that sound acceptable as the turbo is a great silencer. I am considering that myself.

I have been wanting to buy one of these, but I cant justify the space consumption, or the the little use it would actully recieve.

Prop,

I bought one recently from a local UK merchant, 12 ton 1/2" to 2" for £60, so quite a good price, but it is a pipe bender not a tube bender. Difference is pipe is spec'd by nominal bore and tube by OD, also a pipe bender is intended to bend comparatively thick wall stuff, whereas exhaust tubing is considered thin wall and the bend quality is likely to be quite poor with buckling and flattening of the tube. I haven't tried doing thin wall tube with the pipe bender though and techniques such as filling with sand may help produce a better bend if the die fits well.

As you are in the US high quality mandrel bent bends seem to be readily available at a good price so may be a better bet.
David Billington

rob, that pic is exactly what im after, do you have any more photos of the system?
Rob McGeown ( LMG 5K - '72 RWA)

Hey rob,

I never thought about a differance between pipe and tubing, guess thats another reason NOT to buy, so thanks..lol

This spriedget was at Silverstone mg last year at the Frontline stand.
It has a 2ltr Renault clio sport engine in hence the bonnet bulge.
And a nice side pipe!

And anoter image...

And because its friday an otherone...

Arie de Best

So that should be about 190BHP and probably 35mpg!!

Carl
C Bintcliffe

Arie,

That looks nice but I would have added a bend to lift the silencer up as it looks like it'll be the first thing to hit the ground on a bumpy road or circuit.
David Billington

Thats an interesting car, it looks a bit comical to me.

Id like to exhaust at sill level on mine, maybe exiting the wing or inner arch.
Rob McGeown ( LMG 5K - '72 RWA)

Damn that car's ugly....

That side exhaust seems to be ignoring one of the major reasons for having a size exhaust - ground clearance!
Rich Amos (1330cc Blaze Red '72)

looks like a toy car doesnt it. Maybe wacky racers esq.
Rob McGeown ( LMG 5K - '72 RWA)

how about this one...

Rob McGeown ( LMG 5K - '72 RWA)

Rob,

I expect they have another one on the other side so the side thrust from the outward pointing exhaust exit is cancelled out.
David Billington

hey rob,

thats what mine is sorta going to look like.

I like that heat vent on the front fender of the red car arie posted,

prop
Prop

Yes, what a really horrid car. I'm always amazed that tidy engineering and a lot of money can produce absolute crap.

I've never thought that modern and classic blend together successfully and so what I hate most about this car are the wheels, including their diameter.
Daniel Thirteen-Twelve

Prop, the heat vent is from a Range Rover Sport.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but i dont think of this as an ugly car at all.
I would have done things differently: mirror heat/air vent, same diameter wheels but classic ones wit a wee bit more rubber, side pipe thrue/in sill(although im not convinced of the functional use of a side pipe).

I think the wheelarches are very well done( abit of a Cobra look) and i love the frogeye rear on it.
Looking at the windscreen its probably a remodled midget with different rear, doors and bonnet.
Still a very intresting enginering project and probably as fast as hell when its finished.

Everybody does what they like and thats why i dont expect any identical spridgets at Gaydon. :)
Arie de Best

Arie,

A 1500 shell judging from the cross member in the 2nd picture. I wonder if the lights are missing to aid engine bay cooling.
David Billington

Dave, the lights were missing because the car wasnt finished on that stage.
Youre probably right with 1500 on the cross member althoug the sills only have one jack-hole but those are easyer welded on then a crossmember.
