MG Midget and Sprite Technical - Clunk in offside rear......help!
Hi everyone, My midget 1500 (Tigger) has developed a clunk or crack sound in the rear offside everytime I go over a bump or hole. I've removed everything from the boot to make sure it isn't something moving about. Could it be the shock absorber? I had them replaced not that many thousands of miles ago. Running like a dream other than that. Would appreciate any thoughts of what I can check out before I resort to an expensive garage visit. Thanks , Rob

Rob, check that the shock absorber mounting bolts are still really tight. If they are not done up properly you will get a clonk, and worse, the mounting holes will wear oval and exacerbate the problem! Guy

Rob Lots of things to check here depending on how mechanically inclined you are. Definitely the shock mounting bolts and the U-bolt axle mountings. Also the shackle bolts at the rear of the springs,(any wear in the bushes?)and the front spring hanger plate which has 2 bolts below and 2 from inside the car. There is also the front spring bush that could wear. The clunk I had turned out to be a wrong size pivot bolt in the front spring hanger, not the right diameter and didn't fit the thread - inserted by a Previous Owner I might add!

Thanks Guy. As soon as this rain stops I'll getstuck in and have a look. Forgot to mention that the car is definitely lower in that corner, if that makes any difference. Rob

Shock mounting bolts won't effect ride height. Harvey's list of other things to check on the spring bushes might. Also look closely for a broken leaf in the spring. That could account for height and clonk Guy
