MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1500 oil filter
Got my car out for the season and did an oil change only to find this engine has a smaller diameter spin on lug than my last one did. For the last one the diameter was 3/4" this one seems to be 1/2. I did the change but had to re use the old filter as I'm not sure what to replace it with? What are my options? another spin on conversion from the aftermarket suppliers or is there another filter that will fit? MikeT

Mike, not to worry things will be ok. There is 2 filters readily available for the 1500 and one has the smaller diameter hole, the other has a larger sized hole. You just have to order the filter with the larger hole. I'm not sure which filter number it is but it's easily available. Prop found an adaptor somewhere that fit the 1500 engine with the smaller end on one end so I have an adaptor on hand for both sized filters.

Mike. I am not familiar with the 1500 engine. But, with the MGB, the standard "18B oil filter" has a 3/4" UNF thread. For such use, the Mann W917 oil filter works very well. Might be worth checking out. Les

Les, I don't think the MGB filter will fit. It's much bigger diameter wise and a little longer too I think. There's also the clearance for the steering shaft as well to consider. I probably have both midget filters in the garage and will have to check later for part mumbers but if Mike contacts the usual suppliers or a good auto shop, they should be able to set him up with no problems. I have had this problem before and having 2 filters that fit but have different adaptor holes is a real pain.

Ha... been there! The filter adapter for the 1500 changed sizes partway through the production run, and these days it's a toss-up as to which one you might have. The sizes were 3/4" and 5/8", if I remember correctly. I have one of each, and use whichever one a new filter demands. By the way, I did some digging last year, based on an article in the NAMGBR newsletter, to find the best filter for the 1500. I ended up with a NAPA Gold, #FIL1374. More info here: http://www.napaonline.com/masterpages/NOLMaster.aspx?PageId=470&LineCode=FIL&PartNumber=1374&Description=Oil Hope this helps, -:G:-

Oops, forgot to mention: That NAPA filter was available over-the-counter, which was handy. I got my alternate adapter from Moss or Vic Brit, and I tossed the other one in my tool bag just in case. -:G:-
