MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1500 leaded or unleaded?

Didnt see in the archives. 1976 MG midget, 1500 Engine. Leaded or unleaded? Thanks
C.R. Orchel

Anything shipped to the U.S. market after 1974 should be OK for unleaded.

According to the reprint of the owners manual in my Bentley book, if it has a catalytic converter, it was made for unleaded fuel. Without, leaded premium is called for. The main differrence would be whether your head had hardened valve seat inserts. The only way to make sure of this is to take the head off and look for the inserts. If you're not sure, you can always get some lead substitute and use that. HTH

Or just drive it with unleaded.
It causes slightly more wear so you will need to do you valve seats earlyer.
At which time you can fit hardend seats an be sure.

The cast iron heads are so hard the wear is not realy problematic unlike aluminium heads.
