MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1500 Distributer Advance Settings

My car is a 1975 1500 midget with K&N filter, 4-2-1 exhaust and original twin SU's with AAQ needles. But as yet no other engine tweaks. Currently running ok, with static timing set to about 12-13 advance.

I would be grateful if members would comment as to whether i should go to the trouble of changing the distributer advance springs for a lighter set, what maximum advance i should restrict the distributer to (if any) in order to optimise performance.

Although electronic ignition replacement is an option, it is currently out of my budget as i have other priorities, such as new front tyres etc.

I am grateful for any comments or experiences.

Thanks in advance... no pun intended!

I'm not a 1500 expert, but 12-13 deg advance static sounds a great deal. I'd expect between 5 and 8, but I leave the figure to the experts...

It's been a long while since I've timed my 1500, but I seem to remember that the correct setting is 10 or 12 degrees before TDC. I may be wrong, but that sounds familiar.

I had same setup on mine and put it on a rolling road to set up the ignition advance.

The ideal max advance was 30degBTDC @ 3000rpm and any further advance had no more improvement. From 3000rpm upwards it wont change. The mech advance timing curve really only controls the advance in the range idle to 3000rpm anyway.

So, what I would suggest is to disconnect your vac advance line and run the engine at 3000rpm then set the timing at 30deg. I reckon at 12 or 13 idle it wont be far off that now.

So, the bottom line is that you probably ain't too far off!

Cheers for the brilliant info, much appreciated.
