MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 12G938 head

I am looking for any information on 12G938 heads. I have recently purchased another midget MKIII (1967 ???),This one is fitted with a 12G938 head,, the engine is the original 12CEDAH, given the vehicle and the age, this one feels to have a significant increase in torque compared to others I have owned and driven with a "standard" head. The head also has another number stamped next to the 12G number, which would seem to indicate a low series of build identifiers.

Any assistance with info appreciated.

the only number i know from 1275 a-series heads are:

-12A185 early cooper S casting
-AFG163 later cooper S casting
-12G940 latest cooper S casting and most common casting, used up to 2000 in the mini's

i hope this helps
perhaps you can post a pic from the top of the head with the numbers?

One of the thick castings to allow an extra bit of grinding-out, isn't it?

My spare head reads 12g940 NO.2 does that make sense to anyone.??

The 12G938 is the original head fitted to the early 1275s. Here is a photo of the head from my '67 Sprite: "12G938" is stamped in the top surface of the head in the red circle, in small numerals. This head is not considered to be as good as the later 12G940 head for modification, due to more core shift in the earlier head, but will work fine on a standard engine.

Nige, do a search in the Technical archive for '12G938'. I found one of the se heads at an MG show last year. It seems these heads were modified by some of the 60s tuning firms.

The 12G938 head has the same valve sizes as the 12G940, and is quite similar in most respects. Here's a photo of the two heads for comparison.
