MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 1275 gearbox input shafts

Hi all, I have two 1275 gearboxes and 1 has to go to make a bit of room. They both appear to be later gearboxes with holes for reverse light switches.

One has 22G229 on the input shaft, the other has MOWOG G40 on it. Are they both the same? is one better than the other? Does it matter? I have not heard either run so have no idea about condition.

22G229 is the standard late 1098 & 1275 Spridget input shaft.
I've never seen or heard of one with Mowog G40 on it.
Dave O, how about you?
David Smith

Nope, new one on me.

I would take off the inspection covers and have a look at the gears + look at the laygear cluster - it should have markings on it also.

Laygear should be 22G1100; I believe 22G232 is an alternate.
Mark one, rotate and count the teeth on the input shaft - midget1098/1275 has 20 while the Morris Minor only has 19.

I managed to get these images of the input shaft in question. This one shows MOWOG

And this one shows G 40. There are no more markings on the input shaft.

If you have the time it may be worth stripping the two and choosing the best parts from each and make 1 decent box as a spare. The laygear and lst gear are the obvious ones to check as there is no synchro.
Bob Beaumont

I didn't feel like stripping the boxes so stuck a pointer on the output shaft and counted input shaft to out shaft turns. The gearbox with G40 stamped on the input shaft is actually an early gearbox with the 3.62 ratio first gear.

Rob,

3.618 is a Morris Minor First gear for ribcases.

The laygear set was 22G83 if you open the inspection hatch to check.
