MG Midget and Sprite Technical - 100mm PCD?

Hi all,

Okay - I've been on the lookout for some wheels I can put on my midget, but I'm tired of seeing minilites.

I know they look nice, but I want something that looks different. I'm planning on 5.5" or 6" wheels, and I had more or less settled on 185/60 a539s on revolution 4 spoke 13" wheels.

However... I happened across this earlier on:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=180232034981&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=008
and it got me thinking... is there any reason I couldn't use something similar, and use some 14" or even 15" wheels with low profile tyres?

This may be distasteful to some of you, so I apologise in advance ;)

you could put some 14 inch wheels from a VW Golf on but I think you might have some rubbing issues on the rear if you do not have round wheel arches and possibly on the leaf springs. 4x100mm is a really common pattern on this side of the pond, I think even Honda civics use it.

Stefan,

My car is RWA - so that isn't a problem.

The reason for considering the switch from $2 to 100mm would be to be able to take advantage of the plethora of 100mm PCD wheels available.

They'd need to come off a RWD car, wouldn't they?

I'm thinking something like an MX5, for example....

The midget bolt pattern is 4x4 NOT 4x100....but if you have RWA, shouldnt be much of a problem....the problem with those spacers is it makes the wheels stick out ....if you go that direction then spend the extra 10 dollars and get 7/16 inch wheel studs and get rid of the 3/8 inch.

I have found just typing in "13 inch wheels" on ebay will get alot of differant wheels....just track it for awhile...

my midget has recently had its hubs converted to 100mm pcd by using larger studs and redrilling the holes therefore have a greater chose of wheels both size & style & also scrub in partners golf race car tyres. Currently fitted with 15inch x 6inch wide

Tam, what did you do about the splines on the wheelstuds? Do they simply cut into the hub when first inserting them?

bought a set of VW wheel stud conversion & nuts which are M12. Existing midget studs removed from hubs & holes tapped to new size & pcd.
tvf

tvf,

I'm just down the road - where did you get that conversion done? (or did you do it yourself?)

Martin, it was a DIY job by some engineering friends.
I shall be going to spridget 50th at gaydon so can look at the car then, otherwise you're welcome to have a look at home

I was hoping you were going to tell me that a local garage did it for £50 ;)

Having had a good look at the possible alternatives (I'd love to get some 15" wheels on there. I think if that were the case, I'd need 195/45/15s (can you confirm?)

but in any case, nothing I've found in 15" rims, on ebay at least, has even close to the right offset (which I believe is 20mm)

what wheels are you using?

Hi Tamsin

Will see you at Gaydon, and have a good catch-up with your recent (last couple of years!) mods

see you there

Martin, the wheels are 15x6 Team Dynamics 100+ range multi spoke for a retro modern look with 195 tyres. The offset is 38 (to suit VW) therefore have used a few spacers to avoid rubbing. Also they fit over the large 253mm discs on the front.

Thanks for the info,

I'll keep my eyes peeled.

Guys, 4 inches is equal to 101.6 milimeters. Not 100mm or 101mm which are more common metric patterns on a lot of cars. Even if the wheel would slide over the studs when you tightened the lug nuts you would be placing a bending stress on the studs and have uneven loading on the wheel. Only use wheels that are exactly the same pattern as the hub!!!
Bill Young

Hello Bill. You are absolutely right about the PCD and I urge people not to just re-drill the existing holes. Ours were machined to the correct PCD on a mill by an experienced machinist friend. The 12mm stud gives a bigger hole size than the existing stud hence allowing the slight offset in position but this does need to done accurately to avoid the drill following the existing hole position.

Come on Bill, credit us with some intelligence please!

The first post I made was in reference to some axle spacers which had a PCD of 4" on one side, and 100mm on the other - which would then allow 100mm PCD wheels to be used safely.

There was never any suggestion that 100mm wheels could or should be used on 4" stud pattern.

Martin

Others of my cars are using 98 mm wheels. And I don't have any difficutly to fit 100 mm ones. Just use these special bolts who incorporates an excentric. µ
The only thing is to center correclty the wheel and there you might need to do some machining to the hole, center of the wheel
